Description
This is the thirteenth release in Kilkerran’s Heavily Peated series from Glengyle Distillery, located in Scotland’s historic Campbeltown region. Unlike the distillery’s standard lightly peated style, the Heavily Peated line uses malt around ~45 ppm for a powerful, smoky profile. Batch 13 is matured primarily in ex-bourbon casks (? 90%) with a smaller portion finishing in sherry casks (? 10%), then bottled at robust cask strength, un-chill-filtered and naturally coloured.
This is a whisky for peat-lovers and those seeking a bold, uncompromising dram — smoky, complex, and full of character, with the maritime and oily depth typical of Campbeltown single malts.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Creamy butterscotch and caramel combine with sweeter elements like banana fritters and soft elderflower. Beneath the sweetness there is a smoky undercurrent — peat smoke, gentle ash, and coastal brine.
- Palate: Full-bodied and oily, the palate delivers rich peat smoke balanced by surprising notes of honeydew melon, roasted nuts, and even a subtle Iberico-ham–like savory edge. This interplay of smoke, sweet fruit, and subtle umami makes Batch 13 quite complex.
- Finish: Long and lingering — expect persistent smoke, a touch of maritime salinity, honeycomb sweetness and soft herbal or verbena-like notes. The finish remains smoky, slightly dry, and maritime-tinged, giving a satisfying and enduring close.
Overall Character:
Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 13 is a bold, smoky, and intricately layered Campbeltown single malt. It marries heavy peat, coastal saltiness, sweet fruit and subtle savory depth — a whisky that proves Campbeltown can deliver peat-driven intensity without losing elegance.
